What is drawboring?

Drawboring is a joinery technique using wood dowels to hold mortise and tenon joints with pressure. The oldest examples of still functional furniture almost always includes this joinery technique because glue fails but pressure endures. At Drawbore Furniture my goal is to make objects to pass down for generations, which is why I drawbore whenever practical.

If drawboring is so great, why don’t large manufacturers do it?

Drawboring requires skill, extra effort and a little bit of failure. Knowing how to properly make a drawbore joint needs years of practice that large makers are unwilling to invest in their workers. The drawbore approach adds extra steps for each joint, dramatically cutting into profitability. Additionally, the benefits will likely never been seen by the customer because most furniture lives shorter than the glue holding the pieces together.

I am doing something different, I want to make furniture for generations. I expect my grandchildren to happily use everything I have made, it is a disservice to give them a substandard desk or chair. The furniture I make for customers is no different.
